Philippine Army Says Killed Nineteen Suspected Militants
(MENAFN) At least 19 suspected militants were killed Sunday after Philippine government forces engaged fighters from an anti-state armed group in a fierce confrontation in the central region of the country, the army announced Monday.
Kalinaw News, a military-operated digital news outlet, reported that the slain individuals were believed to be members of the New People's Army — a long-active communist insurgent organization — who came under fire during a military operation in the municipality of Toboso, located in Negros Occidental province.
The firefight unfolded on Sunday morning as part of a broader, sustained military campaign being conducted across the region. The violence has since forced hundreds of local residents to flee their homes, with mass displacement reported in communities near the conflict zone.
Officials have not yet released the names or confirmed the identities of any of the individuals killed in the confrontation.
The New People's Army has waged one of Asia's longest-running insurgencies against the Philippine government, with sporadic clashes continuing across multiple provinces despite years of peace negotiations and military offensives aimed at dismantling the group's operational strongholds.
The investigation remains ongoing.
