Tokyo Stocks Close Tuesday with Gains

(MENAFN) Tokyo shares posted modest gains Tuesday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of the U.S. deadline for Iran to reach a deal and reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average closed up 15.88 points, or 0.03 percent, at 53,429.56, while the broader Topix index rose 9.22 points, or 0.25 percent, ending at 3,654.02.

On the Prime Market, sectors such as oil and coal products, real estate, and glass and ceramic goods stood out among the top performers.

Trading opened on a positive note, fueled by reports that the United States, Iran, and regional mediators were engaged in discussions over a potential 45-day ceasefire that could lay the groundwork for a permanent resolution to the conflict.

However, analysts highlighted that "uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East ahead of the Tuesday deadline set by Trump for Iran to make a deal made it difficult for investors to trade actively."

Activity slowed in the afternoon, with shares retreating below early-session levels on light trading volume as market participation dropped.
