PM Modi Launches Rs 2,700 Crore Development Projects In Puducherry
The projects span infrastructure, education, healthcare, housing, water management and urban mobility, and are aimed at improving quality of life and supporting economic growth in the Union Territory.
Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister reiterated his vision of“BEST Puducherry” - representing Business, Education, Spirituality and Tourism - and said the region had witnessed progress in governance and development over the past four-and-a-half years.
He noted improvements in per capita income and social development indicators, and highlighted the inclusion of Puducherry under the Centre's 'Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment' scheme to facilitate additional funding for infrastructure projects.
In the education sector, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and modern hostel facilities at the National Institute of Technology Karaikal, and referred to infrastructure upgrades at Pondicherry University.
He said these initiatives would strengthen technical education and expand opportunities for youth healthcare as a priority area, the Prime Minister said the government's objective is to ensure that medical services are accessible, available and affordable.
He referred to the ongoing modernisation of the Regional Cancer Centre at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) and announced the foundation laying for three Critical Care Blocks under the PM-ABHIM scheme in Puducherry and Karaikal.
He also mentioned the establishment of a new Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Karaikal and stated that Puducherry, which has nine medical colleges, has the potential to emerge as a medical tourism hub.
In the mobility and infrastructure domain, projects include electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative, desalination plants for drinking water, new sewage treatment plants and flood mitigation works across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.
The Prime Minister also highlighted investments exceeding Rs 1,000 crore to decongest Puducherry town, including a Rs 440 crore flyover, as well as improved connectivity to Chennai through upgrades to the East Coast and Grand Southern Trunk roads.
Referring to tourism as a key economic driver, the Prime Minister said targeted investments in spiritual, eco and health tourism were being undertaken, including development of pilgrimage facilities under the PRASHAD scheme.
He also noted that Auroville is hosting a Global Spiritual Mahotsav, underscoring Puducherry's spiritual and cultural heritage.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said the projects reflect the Centre's commitment to developing Puducherry in line with the broader vision of a developed India by 2047, and reiterated that efforts would continue towards achieving the“BEST Puducherry” framework.
