Two Dead in U.S. Austin Shooting
(MENAFN) A gunman opened fire inside a packed bar in Austin's famed entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday, killing two people and wounding 14 others before police fatally shot the suspect, multiple U.S. media outlets reported.
The attack unfolded shortly before 2 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) at a popular beer garden nestled in Austin's Sixth Street nightlife corridor — a bustling stretch regularly patrolled by police and medical personnel on weekends. That constant presence proved critical, enabling an unusually swift emergency response.
"The shooting occurred in an area where the police and medical personnel patrol regularly on weekends, allowing them to respond quickly," Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said at an early morning news conference.
Three individuals, including the gunman, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials. Of the 14 others transported to hospital, three were listed in critical condition.
The suspect was shot and killed by responding officers, The New York Times reported.
As of Sunday, authorities had released no information regarding the shooter's identity or motive. Local officials confirmed that federal law enforcement agencies have joined the investigation as it continues to develop.
