Erdogan Slams Joint US-Israeli Strike on Iran

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the joint US-Israeli assault on Iran Saturday, expressing grief over the attacks while cautioning that the region risks catastrophic escalation if diplomacy is not urgently pursued.

Speaking at an event in Istanbul, Erdogan said Türkiye feels "deep sorrow" and is concerned over US-Israeli attacks on Iran, "which began with provocations by (Israeli Premier) Netanyahu."

Ankara condemned the offensive as a breach of international norms. Erdogan declared that Türkiye deplores joint US-Israeli attacks, "which clearly violate Iran's sovereignty and threaten the peace of the friendly and brotherly Iranian people."

The Turkish leader, however, stopped short of offering Tehran unconditional backing. "Regardless of the reason, we consider Iran's missile and drone attacks on our brotherly countries in the Gulf unacceptable," Erdogan also stressed, signaling a carefully balanced position amid the regional turmoil.

His sharpest warning centered on the broader consequences of unchecked military escalation. If common sense does not prevail and diplomacy is not given a chance, "our region faces the risk of being dragged into a ring of fire," Erdogan warned.

Calling for collective action, the president urged regional and global powers to intervene without delay. "To prevent further bloodshed and spare our region from greater suffering, all actors—especially the Islamic world— must take urgent action," said Erdogan.

Ankara outlined a concrete diplomatic roadmap in response, with the president announcing that Türkiye would intensify its mediation efforts — prioritizing a ceasefire agreement before steering all parties back toward formal negotiations.
