Iran Reports Death of Defense Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani

(MENAFN) Several of Iran’s highest-ranking defense officials were reportedly killed during recent US-Israeli airstrikes, according to Iranian media accounts released Sunday.

Among those said to have died was Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Defense Council and a close adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Reports indicated he was killed during the coordinated strikes targeting locations inside Iran.

Accounts also suggested that the bombardment resulted in the deaths of multiple senior security and military figures.

In addition to Shamkhani, Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, who led the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was also reported to have been killed in the attacks, according to various reports.

Shamkhani, aged 70, had recently been overseeing talks with Washington concerning Tehran’s nuclear activities. Only days before the airstrikes, he addressed the ongoing discussions, stating: “If the main issue of the negotiations is not making nuclear weapons by Iran, this is in compliance with a religious decree issued by Iran’s leader and the country’s defence doctrine, and an immediate agreement is within reach.”
