Sanae Takaichi Gets Re-elected as Japan’s First Female Prime Minister

(MENAFN) Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has retained her role as the nation’s first female leader after being reelected by parliament, following a decisive victory by her party in recent snap elections.

As stated by reports, Takaichi received a majority of votes in both chambers of Japan’s bicameral parliament, officially becoming the country’s 105th prime minister. The elections came after snap general elections on February 8, in which Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) gained a supermajority in the lower house—an outcome unprecedented in the post-World War II period.

In line with constitutional procedure, Takaichi’s Cabinet resigned collectively on Tuesday ahead of the new government’s formation. She is expected to reappoint most of her current ministers, with an official list to be announced later.

At 64, Takaichi first became Japan’s first female prime minister last October after winning the LDP leadership contest. Within four months of assuming office, she called for snap elections to consolidate her party’s position.
