Tech-Driven Farming Key To Boosting Rural Economy: CM


(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- To compete at the global level, Jammu and Kashmir must enhance both the quality and quantity of its agricultural produce, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Saturday while inaugurating GON'GUL-2026, the 11th AgriTech Mela at the Shalimar Campus of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir.

The three day event, themed“NextGen Agriculture: My Produce–My Price,” has brought together progressive farmers, agri-preneurs, start-ups, researchers and youth innovators from across the Valley to showcase innovative technologies and sustainable farming practices.

Ministers Sakina Itoo and Javaid Ahmad Dar were present at the inaugural session, along with Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Registrar Prof. Azmat Alam Khan and other faculty members and scientists.

After inaugurating the mela, the Chief Minister inspected more than 100 stalls set up by agri-entrepreneurs and established and budding start-ups displaying advanced irrigation systems, farm machinery, organic products and value-added produce. He interacted with stall owners and enquired about their enterprises and technological interventions.

Addressing the gathering, Omar Abdullah highlighted the contributions of progressive farmers, scientists and researchers in transforming the agrarian landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. He said sustained efforts in research and innovation are driving modernisation and economic growth in the sector.

He stressed that technology-driven and organic farming solutions are essential for strengthening the rural economy. Emphasising value addition, branding and improved market linkages, he said farmers must be enabled to secure better returns for their produce.

The Chief Minister also lauded the role of the university in empowering farmers through research, field outreach and innovation, and said platforms like GON'GUL allow growers to interact with experts, explore new tools and access emerging market opportunities.

The AgriTech Mela will continue over the next three days with participation from farmers, agri-business firms, students and researchers from across the region.
