Rs 46 Crore Flood Mitigation Plan Rolled Out After 2025 Deluge: Economic Survey

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- The Jammu and Kashmir administration undertook prompt restoration of key irrigation, flood protection and water supply infrastructure following the August–September 2025 floods, with a Rs 46 crore mitigation plan now in place, according to the Economic Survey Report 2025–26.

The survey said the breach in the Awantipora Canal near Waghama village, which had posed a threat to nearly 2,000 hectares of paddy land, was repaired through a canal detour and temporary restoration works, averting further damage to agricultural areas.

Restoration of River Jhelum embankments was taken up on priority, it said. The Zoonipora breach in Budgam was repaired using wooden piling, boulders and earth filling at a cost of Rs 1.13 crore. Work on the Marwal embankment, involving wooden piling and toe protection, is currently underway, with 42 per cent progress achieved so far.

Permanent restoration works on the Gandbal embankment, including toe protection and geo-reinforcement measures, are also in progress, with around 30 per cent of the work completed, the survey noted.

In Jammu division, the floods caused widespread damage to irrigation canals and flood protection infrastructure. Temporary restoration of the Main Ranbir Canal, Tawi feeder channel, Pargwal canal system, Kathua Canal, Garkhal Canal and Main Ravi Canal was completed by mid-October 2025, ensuring continuity of irrigation and protection of critical assets.
