Over 58 Lakh Youth Engaged In Sports In J & K: Govt


(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- More than 58 lakh youth in Jammu and Kashmir have been engaged in organised sports activities, while athletes from the Union Territory have won 2,556 medals at national-level events since 2021–22, according to government data released on Thursday.

The data shows that J&K sportspersons secured 843 gold, 737 silver and 976 bronze medals at national competitions during the period, in addition to winning 84 medals at international events, reflecting a steady improvement in sporting performance.

Youth participation across urban, rural, tribal and border areas was boosted through programmes such as My Youth My Pride, Har Din Khel and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, contributing to the expansion of a sports culture in the UT, it said.

The government data revealed that Jammu and Kashmir has established the highest number of Khelo India Centres in the country, with over 5,000 children receiving daily training across all 20 districts. Women's participation in sports has also seen a significant rise, it added.

J&K has also hosted several major sporting events, including the third Asian Pencak Silat Championship involving participants from over 12 countries, multiple national championships, the fifth edition of Winter Sports and the first Khelo India Water Sports Festival, which witnessed participation of more than 500 athletes from 28 states and Union Territories.
