Türkiye, Egypt Coordination Strengthens
(MENAFN) Türkiye and Egypt are jointly advancing initiatives aimed at achieving calm in Gaza and reinforcing stability in neighboring Libya, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Wednesday.
“Türkiye is working with Egypt on initiatives to make peace in Gaza possible and will continue these efforts,” Erdogan said during a joint press briefing in Cairo alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Highlighting their alignment on Libya, Erdogan stressed that “Our shared objective with Egypt continues to be the preservation of Libya’s unity and territorial integrity to establish lasting stability in the country,” underlining the importance both nations place on safeguarding the country’s cohesion.
Pointing to strong economic ties, Erdogan noted that Egypt already stands as Türkiye’s leading commercial partner on the African continent, adding that Ankara intends to raise bilateral trade turnover from $8–9 billion to $15 billion.
He further emphasized that “Türkiye wants to enhance its cooperation with Egypt in the fields of maritime trade and transportation, freedom of navigation, and maritime security,” signaling a desire to broaden collaboration in strategic sea-related sectors.
Erdogan also reaffirmed Türkiye’s opposition to Israel’s acknowledgment of the self-declared region of Somaliland, arguing that Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial unity must be upheld.
Addressing developments in Sudan, Egypt’s southern neighbor, Erdogan said Ankara is calling first for a ceasefire, to be followed by a durable and inclusive peace process in the country.
Turning to escalating frictions between Washington and Tehran, Erdogan remarked: “Resolving issues with Iran, including the nuclear issue, through diplomatic means is the most appropriate method.”
