Türkiye’s Rain Surge Fuels Wheat Boom Expectations

(MENAFN) Precipitation levels throughout Türkiye have surpassed last season's totals and normalized to historical averages, fueling prospects for record-breaking wheat yields—provided extreme temperatures don't materialize in upcoming months, according to the head of Ankara-based National Grain Council (UHK).

Yasar Serpi told Anadolu that weather-related hazards during the previous year battered the nation's grain industry, with erratic precipitation patterns diminishing crop performance. Inadequate moisture during crucial growth stages triggered approximately 12.3% losses, dropping aggregate grain output to 34.2 million tons for the 2024-2025 season.

Wheat production plummeted 13.7% to 17.9 million tons, barley tumbled 25.9% to 6 million tons, rye contracted 20.9% to 203,000 tons and oat fell 26.3% to 288,000 tons, while corn production climbed 5% to 8.6 million tons, he said.

Serpi noted that despite avoiding significant supply chain breakdowns, climate volatility has emerged as a persistent agricultural challenge, elevating the importance of crop strategies aligned with climate adaptation in production frameworks.

Farmers operating in drought-vulnerable territories pivoted toward wheat and barley cultivation, with wheat acreage expanding by 10% to 15% across certain zones, he said.

Serpi indicated last year's spring frost inflicted minimal damage on cereal and legume crops but cautioned growers to maintain vigilance moving forward.

With wheat cultivation area increasing and moisture levels rising, Serpi reported crop performance has been encouraging nationwide, though he emphasized that April and May temperature patterns will prove critical.

"The timing of the rainfall is more important than the amount, so it is possible to have a cautious but optimistic outlook at this point," he said.

Serpi announced the UHK will convene an April gathering centered on climate threats, supply chain resilience and sustainable agriculture, with deliberations addressing water resource management, productivity enhancement, cultivar innovation and market equilibrium.
