Lukashenko denounces US military action in Venezuela

(MENAFN) Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Saturday “categorically” condemned the US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.

“The President of Belarus categorically condemns the act of American aggression against Venezuela,” Lukashenko’s press secretary, Natalia Eismont, told state news agency. She added that Lukashenko recently warned in an interview with American journalists that “this will be a second Vietnam. And the Americans don’t need that.”

Belarus’ Foreign Ministry also denounced the attack, describing it as a “direct threat to international peace and security.” The ministry emphasized that the Venezuelan people’s right to “independently determine their destiny is inviolable” and that no external intervention, particularly by force, can be justified.

“Belarus expresses its unwavering support for the legitimate government of Venezuela and joins the call for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, which bears primary responsibility for maintaining peace,” the statement added.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the “large scale” strike on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying Maduro and his wife were “captured and flown out of the country.”

Venezuela’s government reported that civilian and military installations across multiple states were attacked and declared a national emergency.

The strikes follow months of US pressure accusing Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking—a claim the Venezuelan leader has denied, while expressing readiness for dialogue. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez stated that Caracas was “unaware” of Maduro’s whereabouts and demanded proof of life from the US.
