Somalia Reacts to Trump Calling Country ‘Garbage’

(MENAFN) Somalia’s defense minister has urged US President Donald Trump to concentrate on fulfilling his commitments to the American populace rather than “busying” himself with insults aimed at Somalia, the East African nation, according to a news agency.

Ahmed Moallim Fiqi made the comments after Trump described Somalia as “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime” during a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

The president was anticipated to discuss the economic situation but diverted from his prepared remarks to criticize immigration from “Third World” nations.

Trump claimed that the United States only accepts individuals from “s**thole countries” such as Somalia – “places that are a disaster.” He also added, “The only thing they are good at is going after ships,” seemingly alluding to piracy along the Somali coastline.

He questioned the crowd, asking, “Why can we not have some people from Norway, Sweden?”

In reaction, Somalia’s defense minister told the news agency that Somalis would not tolerate being belittled. While expressing gratitude for US military assistance against Al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia, Fiqi rejected Trump’s negative depiction of his countrymen.

He stated, “The Somali people are known around the world for their hard work… their resilience in the face of adversity.”

In recent weeks, Trump has intensified his criticism of the Somali-American community, especially in Minnesota, which hosts the largest Somali diaspora in the United States.

These remarks came in the aftermath of the shooting of two National Guard soldiers near the White House last month.
