Thai, Cambodian Border Clashes Leave Three Thai Soldiers Dead
(MENAFN) Thailand’s volatile frontier with Cambodia flared for a second straight day on Tuesday, with at least three Thai soldiers reported dead as fighting escalated despite a standing ceasefire.
Fresh clashes erupted early Monday, triggering Thai F-16 airstrikes that Cambodia says left at least seven of its civilians dead. By Tuesday, the Thai army confirmed three soldiers had been killed and 29 others wounded since hostilities resumed on Dec. 7, according to media.
Air operations continued overnight as the Royal Thai Army accused Cambodian units of launching artillery into residential areas in Ban Khok Thahan, damaging two homes. Phnom Penh, however, pushed back, alleging “aggressive military operations by Thai forces on Cambodian territory."
Relations between the Southeast Asian neighbors have deteriorated since July in a border dispute that previously produced deadly exchanges but was halted by an Oct. 26 ceasefire and peace accord signed in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Trump on Monday called on both sides to uphold their ceasefire obligations “to bring the conflict to an end,” while Anwar separately appealed for restraint.
