Trump threatens tariff on Mexico amid water treaty dispute
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning on Monday, saying his administration is prepared to levy a 5% tariff on Mexico if it does not deliver the water it owes under a decades-old bilateral agreement. According to reports, he accused Mexico of failing to uphold its commitments and harming American agriculture in the process.
Posting on his social media platform, Trump asserted, "Mexico continues to violate our comprehensive Water Treaty, and this violation is seriously hurting our beautiful Texas crops and livestock." He argued that Mexico has accumulated more than 800,000 acre-feet of water debt over the past five years and has yet to respond to Washington’s calls for action.
The president emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, "The U.S. needs Mexico to release 200,000 acre-feet of water before December 31st, and the rest must come soon after. As of now, Mexico is not responding, and it is very unfair to our U.S. Farmers who deserve this much-needed water.
"That is why I have authorized documentation to impose a 5% Tariff on Mexico if this water isn’t released, immediately," he added.
The warning marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute, with Washington signaling it is willing to use economic pressure to enforce the terms of the treaty.
