Russia voices concern over US-backed Gaza peace plan

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova expressed concern that the US-backed Gaza peace plan, promoted by President Donald Trump, could serve as a cover for uncontrolled “experiments” in Palestinian territory. The UN Security Council recently voted on the plan, with 13 countries supporting it while Russia and China abstained.

Zakharova warned that the plan could undermine the legitimate rights of Palestinians to self-determination while serving Israeli security interests. Central to the proposal is the creation of a so-called Board of Peace to govern Gaza, chaired by Trump and potentially including other “authoritative global leaders.” The board would oversee an International Stabilization Force with peace enforcement powers, including demilitarization of the enclave and disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups.

Russia criticized the plan for excluding the Palestinian National Administration from governance decisions and for failing to impose obligations on Israel, such as halting annexation or withdrawing forces. Zakharova also noted that neither the UN Security Council nor the UN Secretariat would supervise the new structures, arguing that this undermines the principles of genuine peacemaking and violates international law.

She explained Russia’s abstention as a reflection of Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim country positions, and as an effort to prevent renewed violence in Gaza. Zakharova added that civilian suffering in Gaza could have been reduced if the US had not repeatedly vetoed draft UN resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire.

On other regional matters, Zakharova reiterated that any Russian military assistance to Iran would be governed by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Moscow and Tehran. Regarding reports of Iraqi citizens fighting in Ukraine, she deferred to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia’s stance highlights skepticism over US-led initiatives in Gaza, emphasizing Palestinian involvement and adherence to international law as critical for any lasting peace.
