Southern Thailand floods affect over million households

(MENAFN) The death toll from severe flooding in southern Thailand has risen to 162, with more than one million households across the country impacted, according to local reports on Saturday.

Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat said that Songkhla province alone accounted for 126 fatalities. Other southern provinces reported deaths as follows: nine in Nakhon Si Thammarat, four in Phatthalung, two in Trang, five in Satun, seven in Pattani, five in Yala, and four in Narathiwat.

The floods, considered the worst in 25 years, have trapped thousands of residents in their homes. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul pledged financial compensation for each life lost.

Teerapat Kachamat, director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, noted that the flooding affected 105 districts across nine southern provinces, impacting over 1.07 million households and more than 2.9 million people.

Emergency teams have been deployed to assist with evacuations, supply food and water, and provide mobile kitchens, water purification units, and rescue boats. In response to the crisis, a state of emergency was declared in Songkhla on Tuesday, with the Royal Thai Armed Forces supreme commander assigned to coordinate the emergency response efforts.
