Over 160 Reported Dead in Thailand Flooding
(MENAFN) Thailand's catastrophic flooding has claimed 162 lives as disaster teams scramble to reach over one million affected households nationwide, officials confirmed Saturday.
Siripong Angkasakulkiat, government spokesman, reported that Songkhla province alone accounts for 126 fatalities in what authorities are calling the nation's worst deluge in a quarter-century, Thai media reported.
The remaining death toll spans multiple southern provinces: nine victims in Nakhon Si Thammarat, four in Phatthalung, two in Trang, five in Satun, seven in Pattani, five in Yala, and four in Narathiwat.
Floodwaters have submerged communities throughout the week, trapping thousands inside their residences as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul committed financial compensation to families of the deceased.
Teerapat Kachamat, director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, stated Thursday that inundation has engulfed 105 districts spanning nine southern provinces, striking more than 1.07 million households and affecting upwards of 2.9 million residents.
Emergency crews have deployed across affected zones to conduct evacuations while distributing essential supplies including food, potable water, mobile cooking facilities, water purification equipment, and rescue watercraft.
Anutin imposed emergency rule Tuesday in Songkhla, designating the Royal Thai Armed Forces supreme commander to spearhead disaster response operations.
The crisis marks the region's most severe flooding event since 2000, with rescue efforts continuing as waters persist across the southern provinces.
