Geneva hosts mass rally for Palestinian solidarity, demanding action
(MENAFN) Thousands of people filled the streets of Geneva on Saturday in a peaceful march expressing solidarity with the Palestinian population. Demonstrators gathered not only to mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, but also to call for concrete action, accountability, and protection of Palestinian rights.
The event, known as the “Big Geneva Protest,” was organized by a local branch of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Participants assembled at the English Garden by Lake Geneva before marching toward the UN Office in Geneva, where the demonstration concluded.
Under police supervision, crowds chanted slogans including “Free Palestine,” “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea,” “Israel to court,” “Stop the war crimes,” and “Boycott Israel.”
Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners condemning Israeli policies while urging global recognition of Palestinian rights. Many stressed that peace is impossible without justice and decolonization, calling for accountability for settler violence in the West Bank and an end to what they described as attempts to eliminate the Palestinian people.
Participants also criticized Switzerland’s stance, accusing the government of failing to speak out. They urged authorities in Bern to end military cooperation with Israel and declared, “Switzerland's silence is complicity.”
A Swiss-Spanish attendee, Anne-Marie Costa, voiced alarm over ongoing suffering in Gaza, stating that “genocide” continues despite the ceasefire and criticizing governments for their inaction. She explained: “I am here because the situation in Gaza is obviously catastrophic. Not only does the genocide continue, but governments are doing nothing.” Costa added that “For two years, we have been seeing horrific images that keep us awake at night,” emphasizing the need to denounce what she called global-level failures.
Another demonstrator, Anais Antreasyan, involved with the BDS Geneva movement, said the march was organized to highlight ongoing international solidarity efforts. She noted, “We are still in this situation where the Palestinian people have no say in how they want to govern themselves or in what territory.” According to her, “These rights are still not being respected.”
She stressed the importance of sustained advocacy, arguing that neither the current ceasefire nor the plan promoted by U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the underlying causes of the conflict. Antreasyan stated, “The main issue is that the ceasefire and Trump's plan, which, again, still doesn't respect Palestinian rights and completely ignores the issue of occupation and apartheid.” She concluded with a call for continued pressure: “We must continue until the Palestinians and Palestinians have all their rights to rebuild.”
