Orban arrives in Moscow for energy discussions

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in Moscow on Friday for an unannounced visit focused on securing his country’s energy needs, with a meeting set to take place later in the day with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to reports, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto confirmed the delegation’s arrival by sharing a photo of officials stepping off their plane in the Russian capital.

Before leaving Budapest early Friday morning, Orban told journalists that his top concern was guaranteeing adequate and affordable fuel supplies for Hungary.

“I am traveling to Moscow so that Hungary’s energy supply is secured for the winter and for the following year, at an affordable price,” he said, noting that the ongoing Ukraine conflict “can hardly be avoided” during his discussion with Putin.

Russian officials stated that progress is continuing on the Paks-2 nuclear power project in Hungary, with Rosatom head Aleksey Likhachev saying the first concrete pour is expected next spring. He reportedly made the remarks after joining the closed-door talks between Putin and Orban.
