Sixty nine people pass away from severe flooding in Sri Lanka

(MENAFN) At least 69 people have lost their lives and 34 remain missing following severe flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, according to local reports on Friday.

The island nation has been battered by heavy rains, rising floodwaters, and landslides since November 17, prompting ongoing rescue operations in the hardest-hit areas.

The extreme weather is attributed to cyclone Ditwah, which was first tracked near Sri Lanka on November 26, according to disaster management authorities.

More than 219,000 people have been affected by the cyclone, with 18,443 currently staying in emergency shelters, authorities said.

High-risk flood warnings have been issued for several major rivers, urging residents in downstream areas to evacuate immediately.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has ordered over 20,000 military personnel to assist in rescue operations.

Officials had earlier raised red-alert landslide warnings for eight particularly vulnerable districts, highlighting the danger to hillside communities and steep slopes. Residents in these areas are being advised to stay alert, limit travel, and be ready for rapid evacuation.
