Washington: US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that the airspace above and surrounding Venezuela will be shut down entirely, without providing any further details.
"To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY. Thank you for your attention to this matter!", said Trump in a post on Truth Social.
Venezuelan authorities have not yet commented on the US President's announcement, neither did the US Department of Defense nor the White House issue any clarification on the matter.
For months, US forces have been carrying out airstrikes targeting boats believed to be trafficking drugs in the Caribbean.
President Trump told a group of military personnel this week that the US will begin ground operations to stop suspected Venezuelan drug traffickers very soon.
