Trump says airspace over Venezuela to be fully closed
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the airspace over Venezuela, as well as the airspace surrounding the country, should now be treated as completely closed—marking a significant new escalation in Washington’s standoff with Caracas.
In a message posted on Truth Social, his own social media platform, Trump wrote:
**“To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY.”**
The declaration comes after months of steadily expanding US military activity across Latin America. Washington has deployed Marines, naval vessels, fighter jets, bombers, submarines, and drones throughout the region, fueling speculation that the US could be preparing direct military action against Venezuela.
Up to now, the US military says it has conducted 21 operations targeting what it describes as drug-smuggling boats, killing at least 83 people whom the Trump administration labels “narco-terrorists.”
On Thursday, Trump signaled that Washington’s campaign may soon broaden, saying that the US would “very soon” begin taking measures to stop alleged Venezuelan drug traffickers operating on land.
The airspace closure also comes shortly after the US formally designated the “Cartel de los Soles”—a group it accuses President Nicolás Maduro and senior Venezuelan officials of leading—as a foreign terrorist organization.
Caracas has dismissed the designation, calling it absurd and describing the alleged cartel as “nonexistent.”
