Russia Voices Concern Over US Gaza Peace Proposal
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova voiced apprehension on Thursday that a Gaza peace initiative supported by the United States and advocated by President Donald Trump might conceal uncontrolled "experiments" in the occupied territory.
Discussing the recent vote on Trump’s plan at the UN Security Council, Zakharova observed that the resolution was approved with 13 votes in favor, while Russia and China opted to abstain.
"We hope that this decision will not become a facade for uncontrolled experiments on occupied Palestinian territory, transforming into a final verdict on the legitimate rights of Palestinians to self-determination, Israeli hopes for security, and peaceful coexistence in the region," she stated.
At the heart of the proposal is the creation of a so-called Board of Peace to oversee Gaza, which would be chaired by Trump and could incorporate other, in his description, "authoritative and respected global leaders."
This board would have the authority to deploy an International Stabilization Force operating in close coordination and cooperation with Israel and Egypt. Its responsibilities include peace enforcement measures, such as demilitarizing the enclave and disarming Hamas and other armed factions.
Zakharova emphasized that the plan excludes the involvement of the Palestinian National Administration in governing Gaza or in shaping the future of Palestinians according to the two-state solution framework.
