Türkiye Expresses Condolences for Sri Lanka Flood Victims

(MENAFN) Türkiye is “deeply saddened” by the fatalities resulting from floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka, the Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday.

In a statement, the ministry said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka.” It added, “We extend our condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and to the people of Sri Lanka.”

Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka on Nov. 26, has impacted 373,428 individuals from 102,877 households, while 43,925 people have been relocated to 488 emergency shelters as a response to the disaster.

The calamity has claimed at least 123 lives, with another 130 reported missing due to widespread flooding and landslides across the country.

The island has been facing severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, rising floodwaters, and landslides, since Nov. 17.

Authorities have also issued high-risk flood warnings for multiple major rivers and advised residents living downstream to evacuate immediately.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed the deployment of over 20,000 military personnel to carry out rescue missions, according to a media outlet.
