Starmer Reaffirms UK Backing in Call With Zelenskyy
(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after what Downing Street referred to as “appalling” Russian strikes during the night.
In a communiqué from 10 Downing Street, Starmer began the exchange by extending his sympathies and honouring Ukrainians who have “showed such courage and resilience in the face of daily hardship and bloodshed from Putin’s ongoing onslaught.”
The leaders reviewed current diplomatic initiatives — including negotiations in Geneva — and “agreed on the importance of securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.”
Starmer reaffirmed that Ukraine could depend on sustained UK assistance as these discussions progress, according to the statement.
Before an upcoming session of the Coalition of the Willing later in the day, both sides underscored the “international unity that has been shown in support for Ukraine.”
They also emphasized how vital it is for coalition members to keep preparing for the deployment of a multinational mission once fighting ceases.
Downing Street noted that the two “looked forward to speaking again soon.”
Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine exchanged claims on Tuesday over nighttime air assaults that resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals in each nation.
