Bear Assaults Man in Japan Near Gunma Train Station

(MENAFN) A man was attacked by a bear inside a public restroom close to a train station in Gunma Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, early Friday morning, authorities said.

The 69-year-old security guard informed police that he noticed the bear peering inside just as he was preparing to exit the restroom near the station, a news agency reported.

He sustained only minor scratches on his right leg. After tumbling onto his backside, he retaliated by kicking, prompting the bear—estimated to be between 1 and 1.5 meters long—to retreat.

The man then rushed to a nearby police box to report the incident.

Japan has witnessed a growing number of bear sightings and encounters, partly linked to food shortages within their natural environments.

From April to October, officials recorded 197 bear-attack victims, nearing the yearly record of 219 cases documented in fiscal 2023, according to preliminary data from the Environment Ministry.
