Openvault: DOCSIS 3.1 Fuels Triple Boost In Median Data Consumption
DOCSIS 3.1 subscribers recorded a median monthly usage of 530.54 GB in Q3 2025, a 207.7% jump from the 172.43 GB median among DOCSIS 3.0 users. Average monthly total, downstream, and upstream consumption also rose by 80% or greater for DOCSIS 3.1 compared to DOCSIS 3.0, detailed as:
.Average total usage hit 719.36 GB per month for DOCSIS 3.1 users, reflecting an 85.10% gain over 388.73 GB for DOCSIS 3.0.
.Average downstream usage was 660.97 GB for DOCSIS 3.1, against 358.85 GB for DOCSIS 3.0, up 84.20%.
.Average upstream usage reached 58.4 GB for DOCSIS 3.1 users, 95.40% higher than 29.88 GB for DOCSIS 3.0.
This OVBI edition leveraged OpenVault's SaaS broadband tools from comparable DOCSIS 3.1 and 3.0 networks covering more than 100,000 homes. Insights stemmed from Vantage PNM proactive maintenance and Vantage PMA profile tools, aiding operators in fostering optimal setups for peak DOCSIS 3.1 results.
Networks analyzed delivered more than 53% boosts in downstream speeds (624 Mbps vs. 407 Mbps) and upstream speeds (66.4 Mbps vs. 43.37 Mbps). DOCSIS 3.1 customers were over twice as likely to be Power Users (1 TB+ monthly) and more than three times as likely for Extreme Power Users (5 TB+).
About 23.57% of DOCSIS 3.1 users hit 1 TB+ in 3Q25, 118.20% above the 10.80% on DOCSIS 3.0, with 0.19% at 5 TB+ (221.70% more than 0.06% on DOCSIS 3.0). Additionally, 5.01% of DOCSIS 3.1 users qualified as Super Power Users (2 TB+), versus 1.87% on DOCSIS 3.0-a 167.90% rise.
The latest OVBI, as always, reviews data from millions of broadband users to spotlight trends influencing network efficiency, revenue, and customer experience. The 3Q25 update features network health indicators on how Proactive Network Management (PNM) and Profile Management Application (PMA) support providers' technical and commercial aims.
Key 3Q25 takeaways:
.Average Usage – Monthly averages reached 640.8 GB in 3Q25, a 8.6% rise from 590.1 GB in 3Q24.
.Median Usage – Averages dropped Q2 to Q3, but medians rose from 431.4 GB to 438.87 GB.
.Upstream – Upstream grew 17.4% in 3Q25, surpassing the 13-14% Q3 yearly rates since 2021.
.Power Users – Q3 year-over-year growth for Super Power Users (2 TB+) moderated to 22.5% in 2025, from 35.1% in 3Q23 and 24.6% last year.
"Though network stress is easing, usage levels stay high, highlighting the need for proactive capacity planning, upstream improvements, and analytics-based demand predictions heading into 2026," notes the report. "DOCSIS 3.1 is a major catalyst for higher consumption; operators can elevate it via Profile Management Application and Proactive Network Maintenance for top-tier performance."
