Türkiye Urges Restraint in Iraq Amid Election Tensions

(MENAFN) Türkiye has called on all factions in Iraq to exercise caution during the country’s parliamentary elections on Tuesday, following provocative incidents involving attacks on election posters belonging to the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITF) in Kirkuk.

“Türkiye is closely following developments in coordination with ITF officials after the incidents sparked by the attacks on ITF campaign posters,” stated Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli in a statement released on the ministry’s website on Tuesday.

Keceli emphasized that “relevant parties have been advised to act with common sense,” extending condolences to the security personnel who were killed in the attacks and wishing a rapid recovery for those injured.

Underlining the significance of Kirkuk as a reflection of Iraq’s social diversity, Keceli noted the city’s peace and stability are critical, especially during the electoral period.

He further conveyed Türkiye’s expectation that Iraqi authorities will implement necessary measures to protect all communities in Kirkuk during this sensitive time.

Keceli added that Ankara hopes the elections will proceed peacefully and support Iraq’s unity and territorial integrity.
