Canada, EU Committed to Ukraine, Gaza Peace, Expanded Defense Ties

(MENAFN) Canada and the EU reinforced their dedication Wednesday to expanding collaboration across defense, commerce, and diplomatic spheres while voicing continued backing for Ukraine and peace initiatives in Gaza, per a bilateral declaration.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas jointly led the fourth Canada-EU Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) session convened Tuesday in Niagara, the declaration stated.

Both parties celebrated progress under the recently executed Canada-EU Security and Defense Partnership and the Strategic Partnership of the Future, characterizing their alliance as a "cornerstone of stability, resilience and prosperity across the Atlantic."
Declaring "unwavering support" for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial boundaries, the EU and Canada called on Russia to terminate its "war of aggression" and adhere to international humanitarian law.

"There is no path to peace without Ukraine," the statement said, underscoring requirements for comprehensive, equitable, and enduring peace grounded in the UN Charter and international law.

Officials pledged continued coordination of sanctions targeting Russia and "those enabling the war," alongside sustained financial and military aid delivery to Kyiv.

The EU and Canada acknowledged the initial phase of the ceasefire accord, praising US-led diplomatic initiatives and regional mediators along with hostage releases.

Pressing all participants to execute the agreement fully, they stressed the necessity of "immediate, unimpeded" humanitarian access to Gaza and reaffirmed backing for the Palestinian Authority's reform agenda and its restoration to Gaza governance.

The session also spotlighted expanding cooperation across defense, energy, and digital industries. Both parties agreed to advance a Digital Trade Agreement supplementing the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and intensify collaboration on clean energy, raw materials, and industrial supply chains.

They committed to bolstering cooperation in maritime security, cyber defense, and combating hybrid threats "in complementarity with NATO."

The joint declaration closed with both parties expressing resolve to "further strengthen their robust and enduring partnership."
