Trump Administration Plans Border Patrol Deployments in Cities
(MENAFN) The Trump administration is preparing to send US Border Patrol agents to Charlotte, North Carolina, and New Orleans as part of a broader federal law enforcement initiative in American cities, according to a report by a media outlet on Tuesday.
Officials familiar with the planning told the newspaper that the deployments are still being finalized.
In addition to these new locations, Border Patrol agents will continue their presence in the Chicago area, where a two-month-long enforcement operation has led to thousands of arrests and repeated clashes between federal officers and local residents.
During these operations, agents have at times employed force, including tear gas and pepper spray, and were reportedly fired upon by an unknown individual last Saturday, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The actions in Chicago have come under judicial examination. Last week, US District Judge Sara L. Ellis limited the agency’s use of crowd-control weapons, describing the previous application of force as “shocking the conscience,” and required agents to wear body cameras.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at the agency, did not provide details about the upcoming operations in Charlotte and New Orleans, stating only that “every day, D.H.S. enforces the laws of the nation across the country.”
President Trump has frequently cited a “crime problem” in New Orleans and suggested plans for a federal law enforcement presence there.
Additionally, Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry has requested the deployment of the National Guard in the state.
