Dozens of Mexicans file complaints with UN for ICE abuse

(MENAFN) Mexican citizens have lodged 30 complaints with the United Nations regarding alleged human rights violations against migrants held by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Tuesday.

Speaking during her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum explained that Mexico’s consular network in the US has been providing assistance and legal support to Mexican nationals facing detention. She also denounced the discrimination and criminal treatment that many Mexicans encounter while living and working in the United States.

“Beyond the fact that we reject discrimination and any treatment that violates—or allegedly violates—human rights, (Mexican immigrants) must be recognized for their work, for their contributions, for Mexico of course, but also for the United States,” she stated.

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry reported that at least 10 Mexican nationals died in ICE custody between January and October this year. Sheinbaum noted that about 40 million people of Mexican origin reside in the US, with roughly 90% living there legally.

“They sustain the US economy. They sustain agriculture, construction and the service sector,” she emphasized. Sheinbaum also highlighted that remittance flows from Mexican nationals have remained steady under US President Donald Trump, with total transfers this year matching levels seen in 2022.

“We will always seek dialogue and coordination, and when we disagree, we will also say so—but always through responsible dialogue,” she added.
