(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described efforts to shift blame away from the BBC for the scandal engulfing the British public broadcaster as a “disgrace.”

The controversy centers on allegations that the BBC edited footage of a speech by US President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, to make it appear as though he was urging supporters to storm the Capitol building.

The fallout from these accusations led to the resignation of the broadcaster’s director general and head of news. Trump is reportedly considering legal action against the network, seeking $1 billion in damages.

Speaking to Russian reporters on Tuesday, Lavrov emphasized his intention to highlight what he called “yet more instances of unprofessional and harmful coverage of certain events” by global media, particularly British outlets.

Lavrov stated, “What is happening with the BBC now is well known. The fact that some ‘figures’ are trying to justify what happened and are talking about some kind of staged campaign is a disgrace.”

According to information from a leaked internal BBC document, reported by a media outlet, the broadcaster allegedly aired an altered version of Trump’s speech.

This version reportedly combined statements made nearly an hour apart and included footage of protesters approaching the Capitol that was filmed before Trump even began speaking.
