Spanish Innovation Backs Egyptian Tech: Scribeme Selected For 'Rising Up In Spain' Programme

(MENAFN- Daily News Egypt) Spain has selected the Egyptian startup ScribeMe to participate in the 2025 edition of the“Rising Up in Spain” programme, underscoring its strong commitment to Egyptian innovation in the field of accessibility. ScribeMe focuses on providing access to information and services for blind or visually impaired individuals, a cause Spain views as“a culture to be developed, not a problem to be solved.”

Spain: A Global Leader in Accessibility

For decades, Spain has been recognised globally for its advanced infrastructure and policies promoting accessibility for people with disabilities. This commitment is reflected in fully adapted public transportation, barrier-free tourist attractions, specialised social services, and tailored employment policies. This strong foundation makes Spain an ideal environment for fostering and scaling innovative solutions like ScribeMe.

ScribeMe: Born from a Need for Independence

The Egyptian startup, led by young entrepreneurs Mark Mourad and Bishoy Michael, joins Spain's efforts to advance this vision. The idea for ScribeMe originated from a personal and inspiring experience: three years ago, Mourad, now 19, lost his sight completely. This made studying subjects such as physics and chemistry highly challenging, as he had to rely on family and friends to describe diagrams, illustrations, and content in PDF and PowerPoint files.
Rather than concede, Mourad persevered and developed the first prototype of the ScribeMe application. The app aims to help visually impaired users access and interact with digital content more easily.

AI Empowering Accessibility

ScribeMe uses artificial intelligence to describe images and extract text from various files and presentations, making digital content readily accessible to users. The application also allows users to make direct calls with an AI assistant to describe file content in detail, while ensuring privacy.

Mourad, who hopes to help others facing similar challenges, said:“I wanted to regain my independence and not have to rely on my parents to continue my studies.”

Today, ScribeMe serves 7,500 users in 80 countries and supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Arabic, German, Portuguese, and Hindi, with further expansion planned. Its selection for“Rising Up in Spain” marks a significant milestone for this young Egyptian startup and presents an opportunity to integrate its vital innovation into Spain's pioneering global accessibility efforts.
