(MENAFN) Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia will not violate its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), but indicated Moscow would resume nuclear testing if other nations, including the United States, do so.

Peskov’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to prepare for potential nuclear tests, alleging that Russia and China were conducting secret nuclear detonations, claims both countries have denied.

President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to the international ban, emphasizing that any nuclear testing would only be in response to similar actions by other states to maintain strategic parity. Peskov stressed that recent trials of Russia’s nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile and Poseidon underwater drone were not nuclear explosions and should not be conflated with banned nuclear tests.

“If another country does this, we will be obliged to do so to maintain parity,” Peskov said, highlighting that nuclear balance remains a critical component of global security architecture.

The Kremlin also called on Washington to clarify Trump’s statements, describing the matter as “too serious to ignore”, while criticizing Western analysts for misinterpreting Russia’s nuclear-powered system tests as nuclear detonations.

Russia continues to frame its stance as defensive and reactive, stressing adherence to international law while signaling readiness to respond if the US or other states breach the nuclear test ban.
