Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Jolts Japan

(MENAFN) A powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled Japan on Monday, marking the second significant seismic event to strike the nation's eastern coastline within 24 hours, the US Geological Survey confirmed.

The tremor originated 11.2 kilometers (6.9 miles) beneath the ocean floor near Yamada, positioned off the eastern coast of Iwate province, striking at approximately 4:23 p.m. local time (0723 GMT).

Japan Meteorological Agency measurements registered the quake at intensity level three on the country's seven-tier seismic scale, indicating moderate shaking across the affected region.

Authorities reported no immediate tsunami alerts or structural damage following Monday's seismic activity.

The latest earthquake follows a more severe 6.6 magnitude tremor that struck off Iwate province just one day prior, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami warning in response to Sunday's quake, though officials subsequently canceled the alert.
