UK Government Faces Criticism Over Plans for Migrant Housing Sites

(MENAFN) The British administration is encountering increasing opposition following the disclosure of a confidential Home Office document, which exposed that as many as 14 additional locations throughout the nation have been earmarked to accommodate thousands of undocumented migrants, according to British media reports.

This project is part of Labour’s commitment to terminate the use of taxpayer-financed asylum hotels by 2029, a system that presently costs billions of pounds each year.

Classified as “official sensitive,” the memorandum—first revealed by a media outlet—indicated that the Home Office has drafted strategies to relocate up to 10,000 asylum applicants across the United Kingdom.

Under the outlined proposal, migrants would be settled in former military compounds that have been refurbished and are capable of welcoming new arrivals right away.

At this stage, British media have verified two specific sites: Cameron Barracks in Inverness and the Crowborough Army Training Camp in East Sussex.

Although the encampments would be enclosed by fences, the migrants would not be held under legal detention and would retain the freedom to leave whenever they wish.

At a comparable location in Wethersfield, Essex, the Home Office currently operates a shuttle bus service linking the camp to nearby towns every day of the week.

Defense representatives have admitted that utilizing military sites situated close to residential neighborhoods is “problematic” and expected to encounter “fierce resistance” from local residents, according to an informant referenced by a news agency.

During the weekend, hundreds of inhabitants gathered in Crowborough—a town of roughly 20,000—to demonstrate against the proposal to accommodate 600 asylum seekers at the unused base.

Protesters held placards displaying messages such as “Protect our children” and “Protect our community.”
