Russia Sets Condition to Nuclear Testing Ban

(MENAFN) Russia has no plans to breach its commitments under international agreements prohibiting nuclear tests, but would restart testing if other nations do, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated.

Peskov made the comments in response to the controversy triggered by US President Donald Trump’s directive last week instructing the Pentagon to prepare for the possibility of resuming nuclear tests.

Trump accused Russia and China of carrying out “secret” nuclear tests, allegations both countries have denied.

President Vladimir Putin later reiterated Russia’s adherence to the internationally recognized Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty but cautioned that if the US or other nations recommence testing, Moscow would take “appropriate retaliatory measures.”

Some Western media outlets misinterpreted his statements as a direct order to restart nuclear tests.

“Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia is committed to its nuclear test ban obligations, and we have no intention of violating them,” Peskov remarked during an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, broadcast on Sunday.

He further explained that Putin instructed officials to evaluate the necessity of nuclear tests rather than immediately resume them, while stressing that Russia would respond in kind if the US or other nations resumed testing.

“If another country does this, we will be obliged to do so in order to maintain parity,” Peskov said, describing nuclear equilibrium as “one of the most important components of global security architecture.”
