Ukraine strikes cut power in Russian border areas

(MENAFN) Ukrainian attacks targeting energy infrastructure have left more than 20,000 people without electricity across multiple Russian regions near the border, local authorities reported on Sunday.

Belgorod’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said the regional capital suffered serious damage to its electricity and heating systems. "Several streets are affected by power issues... More than 20,000 residents are without electricity," he noted on Telegram.

In Kursk’s western region, a fire at a power plant in the village of Korenevo disrupted supply to ten localities, Governor Alexander Khinshtein said. Meanwhile, southern Voronezh saw a fire at a heating facility, according to Governor Alexander Gusev.

Russia’s defence ministry reported intercepting 44 drones over the Bryansk border region.

The strikes follow a pattern of reciprocal attacks: Russian drone assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Saturday left some Ukrainian power plants badly damaged, reducing generating capacity at one provider to "zero" and causing at least four deaths. Moscow launched 69 drones targeting Ukrainian facilities overnight, of which 34 were intercepted, according to Ukrainian reports.
