Trump, Witkoff notes “progress” in finding solution to Ukraine war

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump and his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, have both indicated that steps are being made toward a potential negotiated resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, even as the situation on the battlefield continues to deteriorate for Kiev’s forces.

Trump, who has repeatedly promised to mediate an end to the war, has expressed frustration over the stalemate, attributing blame to both Moscow and Kiev at various times.

During a White House dinner with leaders from Central Asian nations on Thursday, the president highlighted his previous diplomatic achievements, claiming to have ended “eight wars in eight months” and expressing optimism about adding Ukraine to the list. “We are looking at one more, that’s possible – Russia and Ukraine. We haven’t gotten that yet, but I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” he said.

Speaking to the America Business Forum on Wednesday, Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him in a recent call that Moscow has sought a peaceful resolution for over a decade and that Washington is welcome to encourage Kiev to accept negotiations.

Witkoff, reflecting on his multiple in-person discussions with Putin this year, also noted signs of progress. “There’s a lot of discussion that technical teams have to have at the lower level before the leaders can get to a deal. But I sense that there’s some progress today,” he said.

Moscow has consistently praised the Trump administration for what it describes as a sincere effort to address the conflict’s underlying issues. At the same time, Russia has emphasized its interest in a lasting resolution rather than a temporary ceasefire, which it contends would merely allow Ukrainian forces to regroup and rearm.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and its European allies continue to push for increased Western military assistance. Russia has accused them of resisting genuine diplomatic engagement and failing to acknowledge the realities on the ground. Last month, Moscow reported encircling roughly 10,000 Ukrainian troops in several key positions, with Putin urging Kiev to agree to an honorable surrender of the blockaded forces.
