Türkiye–Syria Transit Corridor to Enhance Regional Trade

(MENAFN) The Türkiye–Syria transit corridor is expected to enable Turkish trucks to reach Jordan and Gulf nations by road once it becomes fully operational next year, according to Türkiye’s trade minister, speaking to a news agency. Full functionality depends on resolving issues such as visa requirements and road rehabilitation within Syria.

Omer Bolat explained that since a deal was signed in June, Turkish trucks have been able to pass through Syria to Jordan and the Gulf. However, ongoing challenges remain, including customs procedures, road restoration, and visa regulations within Syria.

He highlighted that the agreement between Turkish and Syrian transport ministers for this route has generated enthusiasm in Jordan. “As this road extends from Türkiye to Europe via Jordan and Syria, it is key in trade and transportation,” Bolat emphasized.

Bolat added, “As soon as we revitalize these areas with roads and railways, trade and prosperity will rapidly increase,” underlining the economic potential of the corridor.

In addition, Bolat mentioned that Türkiye and Jordan aim to repair and modernize the Hejaz railway through mutual coordination. “Hopefully the historic Hejaz railway will be operational,” he said, noting that its restoration would enhance both freight and passenger movement.

He also reported that the first round of meetings for the Türkiye–Jordan Joint Economic Commission (JEC) concluded on Wednesday.

During the sessions, the two countries signed a memorandum outlining joint efforts in trade, industry, agriculture, services, tourism, culture, and other sectors.

“The agreement we signed today puts a roadmap on paper for the future agreements, activities, and programs we will carry out,” Bolat stated, highlighting the long-term vision for bilateral cooperation.
