Beijing Pushes Back on U.S. Tariffs Threat
(MENAFN) Beijing strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent threats to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese imports, calling such tactics “not the right way” to handle bilateral relations, according to state media reports Monday.
“The US has continuously introduced a series of restrictive and sanction measures targeting China, which have seriously harmed China’s interests, and China firmly opposes these actions,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said during a press briefing in Beijing.
Lin criticized the US response, stating, “Instead of engaging in self-reflection, the US has resorted to threats of higher tariffs, which is not the right way to deal with China,” as reported by Beijing-based news agency.
The comments followed President Trump’s Friday announcement of plans to enforce 100% tariffs on Chinese goods and restrict exports of “critical software” starting November 1. These moves came shortly after China imposed tighter controls on rare earth mineral exports.
However, Trump appeared to soften his stance on Sunday, signaling optimism about resolving the trade conflict. “Don't worry about China, it will all be fine,” he posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.
China has recently expanded export controls, limiting rare earth processing and manufacturing technologies and barring cooperation with foreign firms without government approval.
Lin urged the US to “correct its wrongful actions as soon as possible and, guided by the important consensus reached between the two heads of state, address respective concerns through dialogue based on equality, mutual respect and reciprocity, properly manage differences, and safeguard the stable, sound and sustainable development of China-US relations.”
He added a firm warning: “If the US insists on going its own way, China will take firm and necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”
On Sunday, China’s Commerce Ministry echoed this resolve, declaring it was “not afraid of” a trade war with the US following Trump’s tariff threats.
