Stephen Monteiro is a media and culture researcher specializing in smart technologies, networked communication practices, and their impact on social relationships and identity. He is the author of The Fabric of Interface: Mobile Media, Design and Gender (MIT Press) and the editor of The Screen Media Reader (Bloomsbury).
His recent work concentrates on interfaces–the conditions of interaction between people, media objects, and networks–and their cultural roots, historical antecedents, and ideological implications. This research emphasizes the complex relationships that exist between datafication and everyday activities by highlighting the role that forms and processes of interface play in mediating these relationships.
