Emirates Bans Use Of Portable Chargers

(MENAFN- Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA)) São Paulo – Starting Wednesday (1), Emirates will suspend the use of portable chargers on its flights. They can still be carried on board but cannot be used. The measure comes in response to an increase in incidents involving these devices. Emirates advises passengers to charge their electronic devices before boarding and reminds that all seats on its planes are equipped with power outlets.

In a statement, the Dubai-based airline said that passengers may carry portable chargers on planes but subject to certain rules. The company emphasized that portable chargers are not allowed in checked baggage, though.

New rules on Emirates flights

Among the regulations effective on Wednesday are: passengers may carry a portable charger with less than 100 watt-hours; portable chargers may not be used to charge personal devices on board; portable chargers may not be charged using the aircraft's power supply; all portable chargers allowed for transport must display information about their available capacity; portable chargers cannot be placed in the overhead bin and must be kept in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of you.

Emirates reports that there has been a“significant increase” in the number of passengers using these devices and consequently a rise in incidents involving lithium batteries in the aviation industry. In certain cases, portable chargers can overheat, explode, catch fire, and release toxic gases. The company's goal is to reduce the risks associated with these devices and enhance flight safety.
