Pfizer to provide discounts on prescription medications in US –Trump
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday that Pfizer has agreed to provide substantial discounts on a wide range of prescription medications in the United States.
"Pfizer has agreed to offer countless prescription medications and major discounts in the United States as a result of the most favored nation drug pricing model that we established early this year," Trump said in the Oval Office.
Trump explained that some of Pfizer’s "most popular" medications will now be available to Americans at discounts ranging from 50% to 100%. "These drugs will be available for direct purchase online and a website operated by the federal government," he added.
The president also indicated that other pharmaceutical companies are expected to follow suit. He warned that if additional firms do not reduce prices voluntarily, the U.S. government could impose tariffs “at an equivalent amount.”
"We're making deals with all of them, and I said, if we don't make a deal, then we're going to tariff them, an extra 5-6-7-8% whatever the difference is," Trump said.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla described the announcement as a "historic day because I think today we are turning the tide, and we are reversing an unfair situation." He emphasized that the "big winner" of the agreement will be the American patient and highlighted the company’s plans to expand its investment portfolio within the country.
