Trump claims he’s unbiassed on Ukraine war
(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump clarified on Tuesday that his recent ultimatum to Moscow and plans to supply weapons to Ukraine do not mean he is taking sides in the ongoing conflict.
On Monday, Trump expressed frustration with Russia’s actions and threatened to impose secondary tariffs of up to 100% if diplomatic progress isn’t made within 50 days. He also confirmed that Ukraine would receive advanced weaponry, with European NATO allies footing the bill.
However, when pressed by reporters, Trump insisted he remains neutral in the conflict. “I’m on nobody’s side,” he said. “You know what side I’m on? Humanity’s side. I want to stop the killing — thousands of people are dying every week. I want this war between Ukraine and Russia to end. That’s the side I’m on.”
Trump added, “I’ve managed to resolve a lot of conflicts over the past three months, but this one is still ongoing. This isn’t my war — it’s Biden’s war. I’m trying to clean up this mess.”
Since taking office in January, Trump has repeatedly said he wants Ukraine and Russia to reach a peaceful resolution. He has held multiple phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on ending the conflict.
Moscow says it remains open to negotiations with Kiev but is still waiting for confirmation on when talks might resume. Two rounds of negotiations have been held this year in Istanbul, resulting only in prisoner exchange agreements without broader progress.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on Tuesday that EU and NATO leaders have pressured Trump into taking a tougher stance. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov also condemned any attempts to issue ultimatums, calling them unacceptable.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized Trump’s threats, arguing that decisions made in Washington, NATO, and Brussels are seen by Kiev not as encouragement toward peace but as a green light to continue fighting.
