EU Signals Possible Retaliation Over US Tariffs
(MENAFN) The European Union’s trade and economic security chief issued a cautionary statement on Monday, emphasizing that the "uncertainty" brought on by tariffs imposed by the United States is unsustainable.
He indicated that the EU is considering "proportioned countermeasures" if the situation with Washington fails to improve.
Maros Sefcovic, speaking to reporters before the Foreign Affairs Council on trade, stressed that “the current uncertainty caused by unjustified tariffs cannot persist indefinitely.”
He explained that the bloc must be ready for all scenarios, including, if required, deliberate and balanced responses aimed at restoring fairness in transatlantic trade relations.
Sefcovic reaffirmed that the EU has consistently engaged in tariff discussions with the US in "good faith."
He described the proposal of a 30% tariff as "effectively prohibitive," warning it would severely hinder mutual trade between the two partners.
He also expressed belief in the importance of a diplomatic resolution, saying that the EU remains committed to finding a negotiated settlement that could strengthen long-term stability and cooperation.
“We remain convinced that our transatlantic relationship deserve a negotiated solution,” he stated, highlighting the new deadline of August 1 as a priority for continued dialogue with the United States administration.
Sefcovic concluded on a note of cautious optimism, asserting that both parties are moving toward a mutually "good" outcome.
He claimed that Washington is still "ready" to pursue negotiations and voiced his confidence by saying, “I’m absolutely 100% sure that negotiated solution is much better than the tension which we might have after the first of August.”
