Trump wants another assistance bundle for Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering approving a new military aid package for Ukraine, which would mark his first major assistance to Kiev since taking office in January, according to a report by CBS News on Saturday.
Diplomatic sources told CBS that the potential aid is likely intended as a signal to Russia following a recent surge in drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. Moscow insists its strikes only target military infrastructure.
CBS reports that Trump could utilize $3.85 billion in leftover presidential drawdown authority from the Biden administration for the aid package. Another option being considered is the seizure of approximately $5 billion in frozen Russian assets to redirect to Ukraine — a move neither Trump nor former President Joe Biden has taken so far.
The report follows Trump’s recent remarks expressing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that although Putin is “very nice all the time” in discussions, these conversations have failed to produce progress on securing a ceasefire.
On Monday, Trump confirmed that the US plans to provide additional weapons to Ukraine, primarily defensive systems.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon temporarily paused certain arms deliveries, including Patriot air defense missiles, due to concerns over dwindling US reserves. Reports later revealed that the pause was ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth without consulting Trump or the State Department. The suspension has since been lifted, and shipments have resumed.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the continued US arms shipments make it clear Washington is not pursuing a peaceful resolution and warned that Western military aid only prolongs the conflict without altering its outcome.
