KUWAIT, July 5 (KUNA) --
1931 -- Kuwait was struck by a 4.8-degree earthquake. The epicenter of the tremor was 33 kilometers underground at Boubyan Island.
1958 -- Kuwait Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed a new offshore oil agreement with the Arabian Oil Co. Ltd, granting the firm the right to explore, drill and store oil in the concession zone for 44.5 years.
1961 -- Kuwait Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah sennt director of finance department Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to Arab countries to reaffirm Kuwait's position and refute allegations by leader of Iraq, Abdulkareem Qassem, against Kuwait. Sheikh Jaber visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and Lebanon.
1973 -- Sheikh Yusuf bin Essa Al-Qinae, one of Kuwait's renowned historians and religious personalities, passed away at age of 90. Sheikh Yusuf worked as a judge over religious matters and personal affairs law. A man of letter, Sheikh Yusuf was one of the founders of Mubarakiya School in 1931, the first regular school in Kuwait. He was the first director of the school too. The deceased contributed to establishment of Ahmadiya School and Kuwait Municipality. He was a member in the Shura Council in 1921, the Legislative Council in 1938 and the Awqaf Council in 1949.
1993 -- Kuwait Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree appointing Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi as Rector of Kuwait University to be the first woman in the Arabian Gulf occupying this position.
1997 -- Kuwaiti MPs Sami Al-Munayyes, Meshari Al-Osaimi and Ahmad Al-Mulaifi submitted a request to grill Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Nasser Al-Roudhan. The grilling was about public funds and the inappropriate application of law. A vote of confidence was submitted but failed.
2001 -- Kuwait and Iran signed, in Tehran, a security cooperation agreement designed to combat drug smuggling, infiltration and illegal fishing.
2018 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a KD-23.5-million (USD 80 million) loan agreement with Iraq to finance construction of schools.
2018 -- Sabah Al-Otaibi, former striker of Al-Arabi Sporting Club and Kuwait National football team, died at age of 61.
2019 -- The International Olympic Committee lifted a ban on Kuwait sport, which has been in place since 2015. The ban was lifted after Kuwait implemented a roadmap adopted by all concerned parties.
2021 -- Poet and intellectual Ali Hussein Al-Sabti passes away at age 85 after a long and illustrious career in cultural development and literature.
